Lesson 1 Guide Please read this guide for lesson 1 instructions. I create it as a .doc so that you can easily print and refer to it in order to complete all questions and steps.

Course Introduction:

V1 refers to those of you with a computer that prefers Camtasia's default audio (Flash plugin), or

V2 refers to Windows Media Player (WMP plugin). The WMP plugin is for Firefox, the primary browser of this class.

It seems these two file types work for everyone. If you need iPod/iTunes please let me know.

There are two secure ways to access our server. Our server provider is Lunarpages. It's possible to go to www.lunarpages.com and enter our space, as I show at the beginning of this video. In class, however, we will access a more typical method used by web developers, https://www.wvcweb.com:2083, which is demonstrated throughout the class. I show the first approach in this video so that you may see what it looks like, there will be several things demonstrated as an introduction, although we will typically use common commercial web approaches.

The ground rules for online learning in this course are accepted as reasonable for both the student and faculty at West Valley College. Please adhere to these guidelines so that everyone's expectations will be met:

1. email will be answered to within a few hours except for weekends when I will check email once per day. Email received during holidays may not receive a response until the next business day. Generally, I'm very good at getting back to email questions within a couple of hours. However, a few times in the past a student sent an email that said, "hey, I've emailed you four times and haven't received a response!". For each of those times I received all of the mail between midnight and 5 am. So, for the sake of openness, let me say here that I'm a morning person. My code comprehension is minimal after dinner. If you're emailing at night, expect to hear from me the following morning. If you don't hear from me for, say, half a day, I'm in a meeting or with my family and will get back to you shortly.
2. don't panic about the grade. I find that the students who are stressed about points typically have a high "A" in the class. Obsession about grades results in less time spent learning. If you turn in each assignment and stick to the program, your grade will be positive. If there is a crisis or you flunk a test, we can talk about an assignment to bring up your grade. Students who don't get good grades typically are students who make very little effort. I'm empathetic that you are going to school on busy schedules. I'm not here to nit pick your homework or tests so that I can give you a C.
3. have fun.
4. I'm available for helping on homework, but there isn't time to help you to debug work or personal and work projects.

The course hours approved by WVC curriculum, the state of California, and the accrediting board with the 16-week semester and may seem a bit overwhelming, but include:

3.4 hours per week equivalent lecture (what I give you to learn/read/look at)
6.8 hours homework (study, practice, problem solve, write, edit, etc)

This is the set-up for almost all WVC courses, not just in our department. I won't have you fill out a time card, but I will attempt to give work that will fit this timeframe. Some weeks it might take less of your time, some weeks it might take more, depending on your past experience and other crazy things going on in your life.
